4 updates on Rambukkana incident : Area Senior Police officers transferred

Several senior officials of the Kegalle Police Division have been transferred with immediate effect to enable a transparent and independent investigation into the recent Police shooting that occurred during a protest in the area. 

The Police opened fire attempting to disperse a group of protesters in Rambukkana on Tuesday (19) during which one person succumbed to gunshot injuries. 

Issuing a statement, the Sri Lanka Police said that three high-ranking officials from the Kegalle and Rambukkana Police Divisions have been transferred with immediate effect.

The Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the Kegalle Division, and the Superintendent of Police (SP) and Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Rambukkana Police Station have been thus transferred. 

The measure has been taken to enable a transparent and independent investigation into the incident and to enable those involved in the incident and witnesses to attend investigation and court proceedings without interference. 

Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has commenced an investigation into the shooting incident in Rambukkana on the directives of the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Sri Lanka Police said that the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the CID has been ordered to submit a report in three days. 

Furthermore, the Sri Lanka Army has been called in to support the Police to maintain peace in the Kegalle District under the 12 (1) provision of the Public Security Ordinance.

It has also been reported that the funeral of the victim who was killed in the Police shooting in Rambukkana will be held tomorrow (22) in Naranbadda. (NewsWire)
