Five updates on Rambukkana shooting : “35 bullets were fired”

Investigations and court proceedings into the Police shooting that took place in Rambukkana on Tuesday (19) continued today as well. 

Five key updates have been reported pertaining to the ongoing probes into the incident.

  1. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) C.D. Wickremeratne appeared before the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka today to record a statement on the incident. During the probe, the IGP told the Commission that he did not give instructions to the Police to open fire on the protesters. 
  2. The special Police team appointed to probe the shooting incident in Rambukkana handed over its report to the Kegalle Magistrate’s Court today. Following the submission of the report to the court this morning it was revealed that four T-56 firearms and 35 rounds of ammunition had been used by the Police during the incident. 
  3. The Minister of Public Security told Parliament today that preliminary investigations have revealed that the Assistant Superintendent of Police C. W. C. Dharmaratne and Senior Superintendent of Police K. B. Keerthiratne had instructed to open fire to control the situation in Rambukkana on Tuesday (19).
  4. Opposition Leader MP Sajith Premadasa visited the family of the victim who was killed after the Police opened fire on protesters in Rambukkana. MP Premadasa, who visited the family at their residence in Narambada, expressed his condolences and support for the family’s future. 
  5. The funeral of Chaminda Lakshan who was killed during the protest in Rambukkana is set to take place tomorrow, the 23rd of April. (NewsWire)
