Selected sectors of economy to be allowed to import fuel individually

The Cabinet of Ministers has granted approval to amend the Petroleum Act to allow selected sectors of the economy to individually import and use fuel.

The Government said the proposal was put forward by the Minister of Energy  Kanchana Wijesekera. 

Stating that fuel is essential for all economic activities in the country, the Government said it has been identified that it is appropriate to issue licenses to selected specific sectors of the economy to import and use the fuel they require individually.

Thereby, approval has been granted to issue licences to allow selected sectors of the economy to individually import and use the fuel they require.

The Cabinet of Ministers has approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Energy to advise legal draftsman to draft a bill to amend the Petroleum Products (Special Provisions) Act, No. 33 of 2002, making provisions to issue licences to properly identified parties. 

Several sectors of the economy are severely affected due to the existing shortage of fuel in the country. (NewsWire)
