Strike action by Trade Unions gets underway

Trade Unions of government, semi-government, and private sectors have launched an islandwide strike action today demanding the resignation of the President and the government. 

Hundreds of trade unions in Sri Lanka including, health, electricity, banks, railways, education, customs, postal, and manufacturers are engaged in a one-day token strike.

A group of employees attached to the Board of Investment (BOI) Zone is engaged in a trade union action. Traffic congestion has been reported in the Averiwatta area in Katunayake as a result of the protest. 

Employees of all apparel factories in the Koggala Free Trade Zone are engaged in strike action. The employees are staging the trade union action near the Galle- Matara main road.

Estate workers in Hatton have also joined in the islandwide trade union action today. Estate workers from the Dickoya area in Hatton are engaged in a trade union action on the Hatton – Bagawantalawa main road. 

The Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) has also joined in the strike action, with the participation of estate workers across the country, including in Nuwara Eliya and Badulla. The strike is being carried out over the prevailing crises in Sri Lanka.

Employees of several Railway Trade Unions have also refrained from reporting to work today due to the ongoing strike action of several trade unions.

Train services have been disrupted with the Railway Department informing the public to use alternate transportation since there was a limited number of trains functioning today.

Meanwhile, the Airport and Aviation Services has informed that operations at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake are functioning as usual. 

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has also informed that operations are functioning as usual.
