SJB hands over two No-Confidence Motions

The opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) submitted two No-Confidence Motions (NCM) to Parliament today.

SJB MP Lakshman Kiriella said the two No-Confidence Motions have been handed over to the Speaker of the House MP Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena.

He further said that one NCM has been submitted against President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, while the other is against the government.

According to reports, the No-Confidence Motion against the President is symbolic and not legally binding.

The NCM has been submitted to show that the Parliament has lost confidence in the President, and as it is not legally binding, he will not be required to resign based on it.

However, if the NCM against the government is passed with a majority in Parliament then the government will have to resign.

In April, Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa signed the no-confidence motion against the government and the impeachment motion to be submitted against the President.

“WITHOUT CHANGE, WE WILL NOT STOP. @sjbsrilanka signing of No Confidence Motion & Impeachment Motion. Constitutional Amendment to abolish Executive Presidency & Repeal 20th Amendment on the way.” Sajith Premadasa tweeted at the time.

The SJB is submitting the two motions to back the public’s calls for President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and his Government to step down over the failed economy of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
