The Ministry of Health says it has recommended providing a 4th Covid-19 vaccine jab or the second booster dose from next Monday.

Health Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana said that the second booster is necessary for people over 60-years of age.

He further said that, however, the second booster dose is optional for people between the ages of 20-60 years.

The Health Minister said the Ministry plans on utilizing the remaining 08 million doses of the Pfizer vaccine as the 4th Covid-19 vaccine.

Prof. Channa Jayasumana added that no new purchase will be made for the second booster dose.

Commenting on the shortage of medicines in Sri Lanka at present, he urged all medical practitioners to write prescriptions with generic names instead of brand names.

He further said that the hospitals facing acute drug shortages are the cancer hospitals, Lady Ridgeway Hospital, and Castle Street Hospital. (NewsWire)
