Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa declined an invitation made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to accept the Premiership and establish an interim government, SJB MP Tissa Attanayake said.

“Our leader refused to accept the president’s offer,” Tissa Attanayake, the national organiser for Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) told reporters.

Sources said President Gotabaya Rajapaksa had telephoned Sajith Premadasa yesterday (7) and asked him to take over the government once Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa tenders his resignation.

According to SJB MP Tissa Attanayake, the opposition leader has refused to accept any such proposal to form an interim administration without simultaneously working to abolish the Executive Presidency.

The SJB yesterday announced, it will support a national program to resolve the current crisis, based on the proposals put forward by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
