A Sri Lankan couple has called on the public to exercise restraint and not to set fire to the houses of innocent civilians.

The couple’s house in Negombo was ransacked, with gold jewellery, clothes, and school bags with books being stolen, while it had also been set on fire during the unrest that broke out in Sri Lanka yesterday.

In a video message on social media, the couple and their kids who are German citizens called on the public to check if the houses are owned by civilians prior to attacking.

Stating that they had been part of the anti-government protests at the Galle Face Green in Colombo, the couple said violence is not an answer to this issue.

They also called on the public to be mindful of children as such attacks on houses have caused fear and severely affected several children.

The couple emphasized that they have no connections to any politicians, adding that they are part of the missionary and the gentleman is a preacher.

The angry public set fire to several vehicles and houses of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) politicos and those linked to the government last night.

The unrest broke out after SLPP supporters attacked anti-government protesters in Colombo yesterday. (NewsWire)
