The Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka has categorically denied speculative reports in sections of the media and social media platforms about deploying Indian troops to Sri Lanka.

In a Twitter message, the Indian High Commission said these reports and such views are also not in keeping with the position of the Government of India.

The Indian High Commission pointed out that the Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs of India yesterday clearly stated that India is fully supportive of Sri Lanka’s democracy, stability, and economic recovery.

Issuing a statement, the spokesperson of India’s Ministry of External Affairs said India will always be guided by the best interests of the people of Sri Lanka expressed through democratic processes.

Earlier yesterday, the Indian High Commission in Sri Lanka also commented on rumours circulating in sections of media and social media claiming that certain Sri Lankan political persons and their families had fled to India.

The High Commission said these are fake and blatantly false reports, devoid of any truth or substance, adding that the High Commission strongly denies them.

The clarifications come following the incidents that have unfolded in Sri Lanka since Monday leading to widespread unrest in the country.

Meanwhile, Senior Indian politician Subramanian Swamy has once again commented on the incidents that have occurred in Sri Lanka during the unrest.

Attacks on peaceful anti-government protesters in Colombo by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) supporters led to the angry public torching houses and vehicles belonging to the ruling party politicos.

India’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Subramanian Swamy has issued another Twitter message commenting on the incidents that have been reported in Sri Lanka.

“Burning down the residences even of the Prime Minister, shooting dead MPs by mobs means rioters don’t deserve any mercy. We cannot allow another Libya in our neighbourhood,” he Tweeted.

The senior Indian politician yesterday caused an uproar on social media with his cryptic message allegedly pertaining to the unrest that broke out in Sri Lanka.

Subramanian Swamy had Tweeted, “India must send in the Indian Army to restore Constitutional sanity. At present anti-Indian foreign forces are taking advantage of people’s anger. This affects India’s national security.”

Known to be a close ally of the Rajapaksa family, the Indian politician earned backlash from several Sri Lankan social media users over his Twitter message. (NewsWire)
