Minister of Energy Kanchana Wijesekera briefed Parliament today on the situation pertaining to petrol in Sri Lanka.

He said payment had been made yesterday to release a vessel containing necessary stocks of petrol.

The Minister further said that it will take another two- days to commence the distribution of fuel.

Earlier, the Minister had revealed that a ship containing petrol that had been docked at the Colombo Port since 28th April had not been released due to the government being unable to secure dollars to settle the payment.

He said this in turn had caused a severe shortage of petrol in the country, resulting in people standing in queues at fuel stations for days.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has provided an update on the situation of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) in the country.

In a Twitter message, the Prime Minister said gas had not been unloaded from the vessel containing LPG as promised yesterday.

He said, “despite assurance being provided by Litro Gas Lanka that gas would be unloaded from the vessel yesterday via lorries, it has not happened.”

The Prime Minister further said he has instructed the Chairman of Litro Gas Lanka to provide an immediate explanation on the matter.

PM Ranil Wickremesinghe also said that the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) has been requested to summon Litro Gas Lanka officials as well. (NewsWire)
