The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) is recording a statement from MP Namal Rajapaksa on the attacks on protesters near the Temple Trees and the Galle Face Green in Colombo on 09th May.

Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) loyalists attacked anti-government protesters at the two locations in Colombo, following a meeting with then Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

MP Namal Rajapaksa was also seen at the meeting, socializing with the party supporters and taking photographs prior to the attacks taking place.

Many had accused the MP of being privy to the attacks after pictures and video footage emerged of the MP socializing with the party loyalists prior to them attacking anti-government protesters.

The attacks resulted in widescale unrest breaking across the country, with 10 deaths, including that of a Parliamentarian being reported.

SLPP MPs Sanath Nishantha and Milan Jayathilake have been arrested and remanded over the attacks after recording statements with the CID in this regard.

The arrests comes, after the Attorney General had directed the CID to arrest SLPP MPs and loyalists provided there is sufficient evidence on their involvement in the attacks. (NewsWire)
