Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe was sworn in as the Finance Minister of Sri Lanka today.

He took oaths as the Minister of Finance, Economic stability, and National Policies before President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

The United National Party (UNP) leader was appointed as the Prime Minister a few days after unrest broke out in Sri Lanka on 09th May.

He replaced former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who tendered his resignation following attacks by SLPP loyalists on anti-government protesters.

Ranil Wickremesinghe who holds the UNP’s single National List seat in Parliament accepted the post of Prime Minister at a time when all opposition political parties had rejected to work with the President.

The public has been calling on the President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, and their administration to resign over the various issues, including the economic crisis in Sri Lanka.

Despite a new Cabinet being appointed by the President, a Finance Minister was yet to be appointed.

Ranil Wickremesinghe’s appointment as Finance Minister comes at a time when Sri Lanka is engaged in talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and other international institutions, such as the World Bank, on debt restructuring and securing necessary funds to mitigate the effects of the economic crisis.
