Mahinda questioned by CID, Johnston’s passport destroyed

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) recorded a statement from former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday.

The former Prime Minister had recorded a statement on the incidents that unfolded on the 09th of May, where his party loyalists attacked anti-government protesters in Colombo resulting in the outbreak of unrest across the nation.

Mahinda Rajapaksa had reportedly recorded a statement with the CID for nearly 03 hours last evening. 

Meanwhile, the Attorney General has revealed that former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Senior DIG Deshabandhu Tennakoon, and several others are yet to surrender their passports to court custody despite a Court order.

Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Ayesha Jinasena PC appearing for the CID made these revelations when the magisterial inquiry into the mob attack on peaceful protesters was taken up before Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage.

ASG Jinasena said several individuals including Mahinda Rajapaksa, Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, and Colombo Municipal Council member Mahinda Kahandagama have so far failed to surrender their passports to the court custody.

Former Minister Johnston Fernando has informed the CID that his passport was destroyed while being kept at his residence which was attacked and torched by a mob during the unrest, she said.

However, the ASG said Parliamentarians Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Namal Rajapaksa, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, and Kanchana Jayaratne have handed over their passports in accordance with the court order.

The passports had been requested to be surrendered as per an order issued by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage after a travel ban was imposed on former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Parliamentarians Namal Rajapaksa, Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nisantha, Pavithra Wanniarachchi, Sanjeewa Edirimanna, Rohitha Abeygunawardena, C.B. Ratnayake, Sampath Athukorala, Kanchana Jayaratne, Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon, Mahinda Kahandagama, Renuka Perera, Amitha Abeywickrama, Dilith Fernando and Pushpalal. (NewsWire)
