21 A : Patali puts forward several proposals along with now independent SLPP MPs

The group of Independent MPs in the Opposition, including MP Patali Champika Ranawaka, have put forward several proposals for the proposed 21st Amendment to the Constitution.

Speaking during a media briefing held today, MP Ranawaka said that the independent MPs have come to a common consensus on certain points in the draft proposal.

Following are some points in the proposed 21st Amendment that have been approved by the group of Independent MPs in the Opposition.

  • The President consulting the Prime Minister when appointing a Cabinet
  • The period allocated to the President to dissolve Parliament to be increased from 2 1/2 years to 03 years, while the President cannot dissolve Parliament before the conclusion of 03 years
  • A total of 30 Ministers in the Cabinet 
  • The Constitutional Council must consist of 6 MPs and 4 members of the civil society
  • The shortcomings of the Constitutional Board under the 19th Amendment must be rectified (NewsWire)
