The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka has rejected granting leave to proceed on petitions challenging the appointment of Sri Lankan businessman Dhammika Perera as a Member of Parliament.

Announcing the decision today, the Supreme Court said it was a majority decision taken by the bench.

The Supreme Court has rejected five Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions that had been filed challenging the appointment of Dhammika Perera.

Dhammika Perera yesterday assured that he will not take oaths as an MP or Minister until the Supreme Court decides whether or not to grant leave to proceed with the FR petitions that were filed against him.

On 10th June, a Gazette was issued on the appointment of Dhammika Perera as a Member of Parliament from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National list.

Perera was set to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Basil Rajapaksa, as a Member of Parliament elected under Article 99A of the Constitution (the National List).

Following the announcement, petitions were filed at the Supreme Court challenging his appointment. (NewsWire)
