Sri Lankan businessman Dhammika Perera took oaths as a Member of Parliament this morning.

Dhammika Perera was sworn in before the Speaker during the Parliament sitting held today.

On 10th June, a Gazette notification was issued on the appointment of Dhammika Perera as a Member of Parliament from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) National list.

Perera fills the vacancy created by the resignation of Basil Rajapaksa, as a Member of Parliament elected under Article 99A of the Constitution (the National List).

Following the publication of the Gazette, several petitions were filed at the Supreme Court challenging Dhammika Perera’s appointment as an MP.

However, the Supreme Court yesterday in a majority decision rejected granting leave to proceed with the five Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions that had been filed against Perera.

Thereafter, it was announced that Dhammika Perera will be sworn in as a Member of Parliament today.

He has also been tipped to be appointed as a Cabinet Minister, taking over the portfolio of Technology and Investment Promotion. (NewsWire)
