A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed at the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka against the move by Army personnel to remove placards of anti-government protesters in Galle.
The petition was filed today by two lawyers naming the Army Commander, the Commanding Officer -Galle, and the Defence Secretary as respondents.
Military personnel had reportedly removed and confiscated placards with “Gota Go Home’ and anti-government slogans that were held by protesters at the Galle Fort.
The protesters had staged a peaceful protest and were seen chanting anti-government slogans from the Fort overlooking the Galle Cricket Stadium where Sri Lanka and Australia are playing a cricket Test series.
Meanwhile, the Canadian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka David McKinnon has also questioned if it was necessary to deploy the military for this purpose.
“Look, I know that cricket is a very big thing in #SriLanka, but is it a national security issue that requires the deployment of the military? And what law are these apparently peaceful protestors violating?,” he questioned via a Twitter message. (NewsWire)
