Train fares will be increased from midnight on Monday, the 11th of July, the Sri Lanka Railways announced today.
The Railway Department said that the minimum fare for a 3rd class ticket will be Rs. 20.
A Gazette notification announcing the hike in train fares is expected to be issued soon.
The Cabinet granted approval last week to a proposal to increase train fares and other railway charges.
The government said that the recent hike in fuel prices has further increased the recurring losses in the Sri Lanka Railway Department resulting in being unable to provide proper service.
Thereby, a proposal was presented to increase train fares which have not been amended in the last 5 years, and other railway charges which have also not been revised in the last 14 years. (NewsWire)
