Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) General Secretary Dayasiri Jayasekara says three names have come up as possible candidates to replace President Gotabaya Rajapaksa for the rest of his term.
“Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa has already announced his name and the other groups are planning to nominate SLPP’s Dullas Alahapperuma. So in this scenario one of them will be elected in a Parliament vote,” he said during a television debate.
But MP Jayasekara said that he is not sure if any of these candidates can win the support of the ‘GotaGoGama’ activists to take the country forward.
He said that in the event, they reject both candidates, then the next option will have to be looked into.
“The next option is for Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to take over as acting President for a short period of time and appoint a Prime Minister to run the country. I think JVP is also supportive of this move,” he said.
MP Jayasekara also said, “We need to get the JVP also involved in the all-party government that will be formed, otherwise we will face the same protests again.” (NewsWire)
