Parliament will not be convened tomorrow as announced earlier, Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena informed today.

The Speaker said that Parliament will be summoned within three days after receiving the President’s resignation letter.

Earlier, it was decided at the Party Leaders meeting that the Parliament will be convened tomorrow (15) after President Gotabaya Rajapaksa hands in his resignation on 13th July.

Following the President’s resignation, it was decided to accept nominations for the post of President on Monday, 18th July.

The Party Leaders had also decided that thereafter, a new President will be elected on Wednesday, the 20th of July.

However, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives yesterday and flew to Singapore today where he has sought asylum, despite stating that he will tender his resignation yesterday.

The President is yet to hand over his resignation and has appointed Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as the acting President to discharge duties on his behalf.

The President’s failure to hand in his letter of resignation has put the planned Parliament proceedings in disarray, further deepening the political turmoil in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
