The Sri Lanka Army says two soldiers had been brutally assaulted by protesters during the protest near the Parliament at the Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla last evening.

Army Media spokesman Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne said that the protesters had also seized two automatic T-56 assault rifles along with ammunition from the two soldiers’ possession.

“The soldiers had been assaulted with iron and wooden poles and had sustained injuries to their heads and faces. They are currently receiving treatment in hospital,” he said.

Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne further urged the public to be vigilant as violence can be spread by using stolen weapons.

When inquired about reports circulating on social media claiming that a Police officer and an Army soldier had died after sustaining injuries during yesterday’s protest near the Parliament, the Army Media spokesman refuted the reports.

He told NewsWire, that the injured officers were initially in critical condition but are now stable and are continuing treatment in hospital.

Brigadier Nilantha Premaratne further said that no security officers have died in the incident reported near the Parliament last evening. (NewsWire)
