Protester arrested with stolen tear gas canisters

An individual has been arrested for taking into possession of a stock of tear gas belonging to the Police during the protest held near the Parliament last week. 

The Police said a group of Police officers had transported 50 tear gas canisters in a three-wheeler during the protest held near Polduwa Junction in Battaramulla on Wednesday (13). 

Anti-government protesters are said to have assaulted three Police officers who had been transporting the tear gas canisters and had attempted to take into possession of the stock of tear gas. 

The Police had launched an investigation into the incident after which a 31 -year-old suspect had been arrested yesterday at Nanayakkara Mawatha in Obeysekarapura.

Following interrogations, the man had revealed that 50 tear gas canisters had been concealed at his boarding house at Gothami Road, Borella. 

The suspect who is a 31-year-old resident of Pollonaruwa is to be produced before the courts today, while the Welikada Police is conducting further investigations. (NewsWire)
