Sri Lanka Parliament approves state of emergency

The proclamation on the Emergency Regulations was passed by a majority of votes in Parliament today.

A total of 120 MPs voted in favor and 63 MPs voted against the proclamation declared by the then Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

The government MPs voted in favor of the emergency regulations, while opposition parties, including the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, voted against.

“The proclamation on the state of Emergency announced by the Acting President under the Public Security Ordinance was passed by a majority of 57 votes.120 votes were cast in favor of it and 63 votes were cast against it,” The Parliament tweeted.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe declared a state of emergency in Sri Lanka on 18th July 2022.

An Extraordinary Gazette notification was issued declaring a State of Emergency islandwide giving the Police and the security forces power to arbitrarily arrest and detain people.

According to the legal provisions, if the approval of the Parliament is not obtained within 14 days for the said proclamation, it will be cancelled.

Thereby, the proclamation on the Emergency Regulations was debated in Parliament today after which a vote was held. (NewsWire)
