Tourism Minister Harin Fernando says that arrangements have now been made to send the Sri Lanka Junior Athletics team to Colombia to take part in the World Athletics U-20 Championship.

Sri Lanka team was not able to travel to the Championship as scheduled earlier, as officials failed provide them with Air Tickets on time.

Sri Lanka junior team and their parents stayed overnight at Torrington as a mark of protest, demanding justice for them.

Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe in a statement said he is disappointed that players had to face this situation.

“I’m aware of the group of 7 children who are still struggling to catch a flight to Colombia. I’m deeply disappointed of the fact that the federation nor DG of sports have taken necessary steps to facilitate these children despite my approval to fund them with the air ticket” Minister Ranasinghe tweeted.

“Receiving a call from a parent of the Junior Athletics team that the team weren’t able to travel to Cali, Colombia due to visa and ticket issues, oversight by the officials, Minister Roshan Ranasinghe and I with great difficulty made arrangements ensuring the team will attend on time” Minister Harin Fernando tweeted short while ago confirming that the team will travel to Colombia.

It’s reported that tickets have been issued to the players after both Ministers Harin Fernando and Roshan Ranasinghe made guarantees that payments will be done within a week. (NewsWire)
