The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) is on standby to deploy aircraft and rescue personnel (first responders) to undertake search and rescue operations in areas affected by the prevalent inclement weather.

The Air Force said the operations will be conducted under the instructions of the Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Sudarshana Pathirana in the event of a disaster situation in flood and landslide-prone areas.

The surveillance aircraft, helicopters, and specially trained Regimental Special Forces from SLAF Bases Ratmalana, Katunayake, and Hingurakgoda are currently on standby to provide humanitarian assistance and disaster relief to victims, it added.

A severe weather advisory has been issued for Sri Lanka, with the Met department saying showery and windy conditions are expected to continue in the western and southern sea areas and in the southwest quarter of the island due to the active Southwest Monsoon. (NewsWire)
