The Cabinet has approved changes to the rural councils and urban councils in Sri Lanka.

Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Bandula Gunawardena announced that seven Urban Councils have been elevated to Municipality Council status.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing held today, he said the Urban Councils are Kalutara, Vavuniya, Puttalam, Trincomalee, Mannar, Ampara, and Kegalle.

Meanwhile, a decision has also been taken to convert three rural Councils into Urban Councils.

Minister Bandula Gunawardena said the rural councils are Killinochhi, Mullaitivu, and Monaragala.

The proposal in this regard was put forward by Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena in his capacity as the Minister of Provincial Councils and Local Governments.

The decision has been taken after taking into consideration the efficiency of services provided to the people in the area. (NewsWire)
