SLPP MP questions “totally unnecessary” MPs visit to welcome China ship

SLPP MP Prof. Charitha Herath has questioned the participation of Parliamentarians in the welcoming ceremony of a Chinese vessel in Hambantota.

Chinese research vessel ‘Yuan Wang 5’ docked at the Hambantota Port after many issues surrounding its arrival in Sri Lanka.

The Chinese vessel was scheduled to dock at the Chinese-leased Hambantota port on August 11 for refuelling and leave on August 17.

However, the visit was delayed as India had expressed its security concerns over the docking of the vessel at Hambantota.

Following its arrival yesterday, several government and independent MPs in Parliament were seen participating in the welcoming ceremony of the ship.

Former Ministers Sarath Weerasekara, Wimal Weerawansa, and Vasudeva Nanayakkara were among the MPs who attended the event.

Commenting on the matter, SLPP MP Prof. Charitha Herath said that it was a “totally unnecessary” intervention.

“I respect the rights of others to engage in any political actions. However, my personal feeling here is that it’s a “totally unnecessary” intervention. I’m not referring to the arrival of the ship or how that was perceived by some countries,” he Tweeted.

MP Herath further clarified that he was, instead, referring to the political engagement by the group of MPs in a highly sensitive issue such as this. (NewsWire)
