President Ranil Wickremesinghe has proposed to merge selected Pradeshiya Sabhas with a Municipal Council or an Urban Council adjacent to them.
Outlining the proposals in the Interim Budget 2022, the President said this decision has been taken to provide a more efficient public service.
He pointed out that there are 341 local government authorities currently operating in the country, consisting of 24 Municipal Councils, 41 Urban Councils, and 276 Pradeshiya Sabhas.
While there are local government authorities that have ample revenue streams, there are some that do not have sufficient sources of income, the President said.
Thereby, it has been decided to merge the following selected Pradeshiya Sabhas with a Municipal Council or an Urban Council adjacent to them.
