Consultant Physician, Dr. Waruna Gunathilake has warned of harm caused to the brain development process and vision in children under the age of 12 years due to the use of mobile phones.

According to the Daily News, Dr. Gunathilake is of the view that children below the age of 12 years must only be allowed to use mobile phones for a period of 02- hours a day.

Addiction to mobile phones by children aged 1- 12 results in concentration issues, irritation, aggressive conduct, and isolation, while it also impacts their ability to make proper decisions.

However, for children and adults using a desktop computer or a laptop maintaining a distance of 18 inches between the screen and the eyes is considered the medically recommended method to use a computer.

Hence, it is advised for children to use a desktop computer or a similar wider screen for their studies, he said.

Stating that the use of mobile phones causes severe health issues in both children and adults, Dr. Gunathilake said it is essential for a child or an adult to have seven hours of sleep at night in order to maintain a healthy body.

Changes in the sleeping pattern can cause high cholesterol, obesity, and changes in the lipid profile, he further warned. (NewsWire)
