ISRO is developing smart geostationary communications satellites that can be reconfigured by changing frequencies and bandwidth according to customer demand profile, a senior official said Monday.

Geosynchronous satellites are the mainstay of India’s communication needs in various sectors including telecommunications, television broadcasting, satellite information gathering, societal applications, weather forecasting, disaster warning and disaster operations. search and rescue.

We are also looking at some smart geosynchronous satellites (GSATs) in the coming years that we can reconfigure and reshape based on demand.

It’s already a talking point on our design front, ISRO President S Somnath told reporters here. He was interacting with the media following the nationwide launch of Hughes Communications’ high-speed satellite broadband service.

He said smart GSATs would enable the shaping of spot beams, which are high-powered targeted radio signals sent by satellite, according to customer demand and would also enable the shaping of the antennas receiving the beams.

Since the coverage area is smaller for spot beams, there is also a reduced risk of interference with other transmissions using the same frequencies, or interception by third parties.

The future satellites that we are going to put into orbit will be different where you can shape the beams according to demand or even change the frequency or even change the bandwidth according to the demand profile on what exists on the ground on a dynamic basis, said Somnath.

He said they would be software-driven high-throughput satellites that will be built in the coming days.

Somnath said that while ISRO would demonstrate technology internally, it would encourage the private sector to create and market such services.

We would like to present it as a commercial product and not as a technological demonstrator. Of course, we will demo technology internally to satisfy ourselves, but we would like to offer it immediately as a commercial solution to a user,” Somnath said.

The chairman of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) declined to give a timetable for the launch of the smart GSATs. (PTI)
