Declaration of High-Security Zones : Statement by Liberal Youth Movement

The Liberal Youth Movement says it will initiate legal action against President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s declaration of several areas in Colombo and Sri Jayawardenepura as high-security zones.

Issuing a statement, the Liberal Youth Movement said the declaration violates the fundamental rights of the citizens of Sri Lanka.

The movement further said that thereby, it will initiate legal action to ensure the fundamental rights granted to the Sri Lankan citizen by the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka’s President and the Minister of Defense Ranil Wickramasinghe has declared several areas of Colombo and Sri Jayawardenepura as high-security zones in accordance with section 2 of the Official Secrets Act No. 32 of 1955.

It is the understanding of the Liberal Youth Movement that the said action violates many fundamental rights of Sri Lankan citizens, such as freedom of movement, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of expression, which are enshrined in the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

In addition, the Liberal Youth Movement emphasizes that it violates the liberal values ​​of liberty, individualism, and the rule of law which the Liberal Youth Movement strongly believes in and undertakes to protect.

Accordingly, we express our deep concern about this action of President and Defense Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe. Moreover, we as the Liberal Youth Movement expect to take legal actions to ensure the fundamental rights granted to the Sri Lankan citizen by the Constitution of Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
