Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has held discussions with the President of Asia Rugby Qais Al Dhalai on the suspension of Sri Lanka Rugby.

During a recent visit to Dubai, Minister Ranasinghe met Qais Al Dhalai at the Asia Rugby offices.

Stating that he had made a request for the Sri Lanka Rugby team to participate in the Asia Rugby Tournament, the Sports Minister said he expects to receive a positive response soon.

Responding to Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, President of Asia Rugby Qais Al Dhalai said it was a privilege to welcome Minister Ranasinghe at the Asia Rugby office.

Stating that collective efforts will be taken to work to set athletes at the heart of every effort they provide, Qais Al Dhalai added that Sri Lanka remains a vital market for Asia Rugby.

In April 2022, the former Sports Minister via an official Government Gazette dated 1st April 2022 suspended Sri Lanka Rugby.

However, the National Olympic Committee via an official letter signed by the Secretary-General recognized Sri Lanka Rugby as the sole representative of the sport of rugby in Sri Lanka.

Following this, the Asia Rugby Executive Committee concluded that, in accordance with Asia Rugby Regulation 3, the membership of the Sri Lanka Rugby will be temporarily suspended from the Regional Association with immediate effect until further notice.

The Committee said that the suspension is made on the basis that the Sri Lanka Rugby may no longer be considered fully responsible for the organization of rugby-related matters in its jurisdiction, or it is no longer in a position to perform its constitutional and regulatory duties in an appropriate manner.
