The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has launched a probe into Police action during the protest held at the Galle Face Green in Colombo on Sunday (9).
Issuing a statement, the Human Rights Commission questioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the grounds used to disperse protesters.
The HRCSL also instructed the IGP to submit within 24 hours the grounds that the Police decided as reasoning to disperse the said protest.
The probe comes after the Police were seen using force to remove protestors, some of whom were carrying children, from the Galle Face Green on Sunday.
A group of members of the Aragalaya organized a demonstration to commemorate the activists who had lost their lives contributing to the Aragalaya since the 9th of April.
However, the Police were seen using force to disperse the crowd even prior to teh demonstration commencing.
Four people who were arrested during the protest on Sunday were by the Fort Magistrate’s Court today. The protesters were released on a personal bail of Rs. 500,000/- each.
Meanwhile, the Fort Magistrate’s Court also turned down a request by the Police to prevent the protest that was organized by lawyers and professionals at the Galle Face Green today.
Despite the court order, the Police are reported to have set up roadblocks preventing the protest from proceeding. (NewsWire)
