The Court of Appeal today instructed the Fort Magistrate’s Court to postpone proceedings against former President Maithripala Sirisena related to a case on the 2019 Easter Sunday attacks for a period of 10 weeks starting today (14).

The order was issued after the Writ Application filed by the former President was taken up for consideration today.

Maithripala Sirisena had filed a Writ Application at the Court of Appeal seeking an order to suspend the notice issued by the Fort Magistrate’s Court naming him a suspect in the Easter attacks case.

Naming Maithripala Sirisena a suspect in the Easter attacks case, the Fort Magistrate’s Court issued a notice to the former President to appear in court on Friday, 14th October.

The notice was issued after the court considered a private plaint that was filed by a member of the National Catholic Committee for Justice to Easter Sunday Attack Victims Fr. Cyril Gamini Fernando.

The private plaint was filed requesting the court to name Sirisena as an accused of the Easter attacks on charges of failing to prevent the attacks. (NewsWire)
