Police Constable suspended for selling scooter confiscated as evidence

A Police Constable who sold a scooter, that had been confiscated as evidence, was suspended from the service and arrested, it is reported.

The Mirihana Police said the Police Constable has been arrested on charges of having sold the scooter to an individual engaged in drug peddling.

The motorcycle had been seized over a traffic offence and had been placed at the Police station after being produced in court and declared as court property.

The Police Constable had sold the motorcycle for a price of Rs. 10,000 to a close associate, while he had also assisted the latter to load and transport the vehicle in a lorry from the Police station.

Based on a tip-off, the Mirihana Police had launched an investigation into the Police Constable’s close associate engaging in drug peddling using the scooter.

Upon being arrested, the suspect revealed that he had purchased the scooter from the said Police Constable and the vehicle was found hidden at the former’s residence.  (NewsWire)
