UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Association Clement Voule has urged Sri Lankan authorities to respect the right to public assembly.

His request comes ahead of protests planned by the Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) today.

“Law enforcement has an obligation to protect public protestors and must create a safe and enabling environment for all to express their views. I’ll be following the situation closely,” Clement Voule said, in a message on Twitter.

The IUSF has organized a protest march from Kelaniya University today against State repression and several other issues.

The protest march is being held mainly to mark 60 days since the detention of its student leaders Wasantha Mudalige and Galwewa Siridhamma Thero under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and to demand solutions to the economic issues faced by the people. (NewsWire)
