Sailors missing for more than a month return home

Six sailors of the Sri Lanka Navy who were adrift for more than a month are undergoing medical assessment, having been brought ashore in the early hours of this morning (19), Navy sources said.

Navy spokesman Capt, Indika de Silva confirmed to NewsWire that the sailors had reached the Island safely this morning.

The Navy had lost radio contact with the 6-member crew two days (September 17) into a surveillance mission last month, when their vessel is suspected to have developed engine troubles causing it to drift nearly 400 nautical miles southeast from the southern coast.

Sri Lanka sought assistance from the Maldives, India, Australia, and other nations to aid in the search and rescue operation to find the missing vessel.

Yesterday morning (18) the sailors had managed to repair their communication system and contacted the Navy headquarters.

According to the Navy, the auxiliary vessel A521 was dispatched to bring ashore the sailors. (NewsWire)
