Sri Lanka’s main opposition party, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has pledged its conditional support for the proposed 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

SJB and Opposition leader MP Sajith Premadasa stated that the SJB has extended its support provided that no underhand revisions are attempted at the committee stage.

Addressing the Parliament today (20), MP Premadasa said that the party will vote in favour of the 22nd Amendment Bill in good faith subject to two key conditions.

“Firstly, there will be no changes to the prohibition on dual citizens entering the Parliament, while secondly, there will be no attempt to change the President’s power to dissolve parliament in two and a half years,” he said.

The SJB Leader said that based on these conditions, the opposition parties in Parliament have agreed to vote in favour of the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution.

“Even though it is not the broader reform sought by the party, the SJB is ready to be flexible in the interest of the country,” MP Premadasa added.

The debate on the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution is taking place in Parliament today, with a vote to be held later in the day. (NewsWire)
