Opposition leader Sajith Premadasa says the youth and protesters who rose up as the ‘Aragalaya’ deserve the credit and recognition for pushing through the 22nd Amendment, which is before the house today.

Addressing the Parliament, Premadasa stressed that the stance of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya was not about the contents of the 20th or 22nd Amendments, stating that in the party’s opinion the 21st amendment was the most suitable.

However, he said that the SJB will support the 22nd amendment, not because it offered a solution to the current crisis but because it was an improvement from the 20th amendment.

“Even though the 22nd Amendment is not a solution at present, it is better than the 20th Amendment to the Constitution,” he said, blaming the misuse of executive powers and the egotism derived from a 2/3rds majority, resultant of 69 lakhs of voters, for the downfall of the country by the previous government.

MP Premadasa alleged that those who were chased out of power via the ‘Aragalaya’ have launched campaigns with vengeance to further destroy the nation while those who came to power on the backs of the ‘Aragalaya’ have done nothing to provide justice for the protesters who were assaulted on 09th May.
