The Police Sub-Inspector (SI) who was interdicted over the shooting of a 15-year-old boy in Thihagoda, Matara has been remanded.
The 55-year-old Police officer was remanded until 02nd November after being produced before the Matara Magistrate’s Court today.
The Police SI was arrested after his weapon had accidentally discharged during an altercation with a group, injuring the teenager.
The incident had occurred last evening when a group of Police officers had inspected a three-wheeler that had allegedly failed to heed their warnings to stop.
The teenager who sustained injuries to the head was initially admitted to the Matara Hospital and was later transferred to the Karapitiya Hospital for further treatment.
According to hospital sources, the boy is in stable condition and is expected to undergo surgery today.
The injured boy is a resident of the Katuwandhuduwa area in Nayimbala, Matara, and a grade 10 student of the Nayimbala Vidyalaya.
A tense situation was also reported in front of the Thihagoda Police station following the incident yesterday as area residents surrounded the Police station.
Meanwhile, a team from the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) inspected the scene of the incident today and also recorded statements.
The HRCSL also said that it has launched an investigation into the incident. (NewsWire)
