Health Services DG Dr. Asela Gunawardena downplayed concerns about the spread of monkeypox in Sri Lanka.

He said people need not fear due to the detection of a monkeypox-infected individual in Sri Lanka.

Speaking to the media today, he said the patient was detected soon due to the well-implemented health protocols in the country at present.

Dr. Gunawardena said that the 19-year-old youth had arrived on 1st November from overseas and doctors had taken a sample from him on suspicion.

He had been thereafter hospitalized after which the samples had returned positive on the following day confirming his infection.

The infected youth is now being observed by medical experts and is in stable condition, he said.

Dr. Asela Gunawardena said the situation is under control and people need not panic over the matter. (NewsWire)
