CID to probe incidents of ragging at universities

Investigations regarding complaints over incidents of ragging will be handed over to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), the Sri Lanka Police said today. 

Issuing a statement, the Police said a number of complaints have been received over the past few days with regard to several incidents of ragging in universities.

The Police said a 2nd-year student of Kelaniya University had initially filed a complaint with the Kiribathgoda Police accusing a group of senior students of having ragged him.

Thereafter, a group of senior students had assaulted another group of 2nd-year students at the university hostel linked to the previous incident. 

The Police further said that the Peradeniya Police has also received a complaint stating that a student of the Peradeniya University had been ragged by way of being forced to send inappropriate pictures via social media.

The CID has been handed over the cases and will continue the investigations into teh complaints. (NewsWire)
