A ‘Satyagraha campaign’ has been launched opposite the United Nations (UN) Office in Colombo urging the release of two Inter-University Students Federation (IUSF) leaders.

The campaign is being conducted calling for the immediate release of IUSF Convenor Wasantha Mudalige and the Inter-University Bhikkhu Federation’s (IUBF) Ven. Galwewa Siridhamma Thero.

The two student leaders have been detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) over their participation in a protest in Colombo.

Those involved in the ‘Satyagraha campaign’ have handed over a letter to the UN Resident Coordinator (UNRC) in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer-Hamdy.

Upon receiving the letter, Hanaa Singer-Hamdy informed the protesters that the UN is following the case and will take the necessary measures with regard to the letter handed in today as well.

“I will follow up with the letter. Stay as much as you want and continue your campaign. Please express your opinions peacefully,” she added.

Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka yesterday granted leave to proceed with the Fundamental Rights petition that was filed regarding the detention of Wasantha Mudalige.

Issuing the order, the Supreme Court also instructed the Police to produce Mudalige before the courts. (NewsWire)
