Sri Lankan journalist Tharindu Jayawardhana says the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) has commenced an investigation against him over a social media post published seeking public assistance to identify a group of Police officers who had allegedly abused their powers during a protest.

Jayawardhana had published the post in order to ascertain the identities of several Police officers who had allegedly used excessive force to remove protesters, some with children, during a peaceful demonstration at the Galle Face in Colombo in October.

The journalist revealed that the CID had issued a summons for him to report to the department at 09.30 am today over a complaint filed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the matter.

Stating that he will report to the CID as requested, Tharindu Jayawardhana further stated that he intends to file a complaint against the misuse of state assets by the IGP to penalize and inconvenience those who expose details of police officers who are engaged in criminal activities and the abuse of powers.
