Indictments filed against Health Minister & two others in 2015 GI Pipe case

The Colombo High Court today served indictments on three persons, including Health Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, over a 2015 corruption case regarding the misappropriation of funds to purchase GI pipes in the lead-up to an election.

The former Operations Director of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation Chandrapala Liyanage and former Chairman Wimal Rupasinghe are the other two persons named in the case filed by the Bribery Commission.

The case against the three accused alleges that they used Rs. 990,000/- in funds owned by the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation to purchase 600 GI pipes for various purposes in the run-up to the 2015 Presidential Election.

Taking up for hearing the case today, Colombo High Court Judge Nawaratne Marasinghe served indictments on the defendants and also released them on a cash bail of Rs. 20,000/- each, and a personal bail of Rs. 500,000/- each.

In addition, the Colombo High Court Judge imposed an overseas travel ban on the three defendants until the conclusion of the trial and ordered them to surrender their passports to the court.
