Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe has said that the Lanka Premiere League (LPL) has been played without the approval of the Ministry of Sports.

Responding to a question raised by SJB MP Nalin Bandara in Parliament on Saturday (26) how a betting and gaming company can be the main sponsor of the tournament, the Sports Minister said that as the Minister of Sports he too has not seen the agreement.

Referring to a sports betting company “Fair play” sponsoring Sri Lankan Cricketers during the Asia Cup, Minister said that he has advised Sri Lanka Cricket to not to put betting logos in the national jersey of Sri Lankan cricketers.

He further said that he was not aware about the T10 tournament organized by SLC, until he saw it in the media.

“I also got to know only from media reports that there has been an agreement to play a T10 tournament. This is the situation. I understand that FairPlay is a betting and gaming company and we have already advised SLC that it’s not appropriate that players’ jerseys should include this name” he further said.
