Student in Ampitiya torched over extortion issue

A brawl related to extortion had resulted in a student who had obtained 09 A passes in the GCE Ordinary Level Examination being attacked by another individual in Ampitiya recently (26), the Police said.

An individual had poured kerosene on the teenage boy and had set fire, resulting in the victim sustaining burn injuries to his hands and neck, while he is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

According to Ada Derana,  Police investigations have revealed that the suspect had tried to extort money from the father of the victim and due to its failure set ablaze his son. 

Residents of Ampitiya have also informed the Police of a group of individuals acting in a threatening manner in the area due to which the residents are living in fear. 

They have revealed that individuals addicted to heroin and cannabis are threatening the villagers seeking money, and have been engaging in such activities for some time in the area. (NewsWire)
