The Department of Meteorology says several spells of showers are likely in the Eastern province today (06).

Showers or thundershowers may occur at a few places in the Sabaragamuwa Province and in the Hambanthota district during the afternoon or night.

It further said that the low-pressure area in the south Andaman Sea and adjoining the southeast Bay of Bengal is very likely to intensify into a depression over the South-East Bay of Bengal by today and move west-northwestwards near the northern coast of Sri Lanka.

It will intensify further gradually into a Cyclonic Storm and reach the Southwest Bay of Bengal near north Tamil Nadu coasts by Thursday (08).

Under the influence of this system, rainy and windy conditions are expected to enhance over the Northern, North-Central, and Eastern Provinces on Wednesday (07) and Thursday (08).

Thereby, the Met Department has advised the Naval and fishing communities not to venture into the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa, and Southwest Bay of Bengal from 12.00 noon today until further notice.

The department said showers or thundershowers will occur in several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mullaitivu to Galle via Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Pottuvil, and Hambanthota.

Winds will be northerly or north-easterly and the speed will be 25-35 kmph. Wind speed may increase up to 50 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa.

It added that the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Mannar, Kankasanturai, Trincomalee & Batticaloa will be rough at times. Other sea areas around the island will be moderate. (NewsWire)
