The National Election Commission says it expects to officially announce the date to call for nominations for the Local Government elections, during the last week of December 2022.
Issuing a statement, Chairman of the Commission Nimal G. Punchihewa said that the decision was taken during a meeting of the National Election Commission members that was held today (08).
Punchihewa further said in the statement that the Gazette notification on the number of representatives to be elected for each division will be issued dated 08th December 2022.
The decision comes amidst calls from various parties for President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s government to hold both the local government and parliament polls in the first quarter of 2023.
The local government elections were postponed by one year in February last year and they should be held by February 20, 2023.
President Ranil Wickremesinghe has the discretion to dissolve the Parliament anytime after February next year as per powers vested in him. (NewsWire)
