Sri Lanka risks long power cuts by March next year if the required coal consignments are not received as requested, the Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Engineer’s Union Nihal Weeraratne warned.

Weeraratne said that at least 38 coal vessels are required to operate the Lakvijaya Power Station in Norochcholai, but only 05 ships have arrived thus far.

Stating there are only 04 months left and only 24 vessels can be unloaded, he said that, however, all 29 vessels must be unloaded.

Weeraratne revealed that the Lakvijaya Power Station in Norochcholai is currently only producing 45% of its full capacity.

He added that in the event the required coal consignments are not received as requested, then power cuts that were scheduled for June will be brought forward to March and April next year. (NewsWire)
